Tutoring and Assisting with CAR
  • Recruiting
  • Look for students who are successful in calculus who have an interest in teaching
    • Studuents getting A or B in Calc 1 or 2
  • Students fill out applications and are interviewed
    • Hired based on the above qualifications
  • Training
  • Training takes place during first semester of tutoring
  • Tutors meet once per week with Math Ed faculty to discuss ideas of knowing and learning mathematics relative to college algebra and precalculus content
    • These are paid training sessions
  • Tutors form own cohort to assist each other during the semester
  • In the tutor room
  • Tutors are responsible for helping college algebra and precalculus students learn how to think mathematically
    • They do NOT solve problems for the students
  • Tutors work together to make sure tutor room is always staffed
    • They can trade shifts or pass shifts to another tutor when necessary
  • Assisting
  • High performing tutors may be assigned to assist in a college algebra or precalc course
  • They work with an experienced teacher
  • Their duties include sitting in and helping in class, grading, and spending a few hours in the tutor room
  • They often get to teach some classes
  • Training for teaching
  • Students who have tutored and assisted may get an opportunity to teach their own class
  • They receive week long intensive paid training on how to handle their own class
    • They learn how to use the technology
    • How to track grades and handle students on their own
    • Other policies that are in place for teachers at ASU
  • Teaching
    • Students who have been chosen to teach will be assigned a mentor teacher to whom they report
    • They will have their own section of college algebra for which they will be responsible
    • They will use a curriculum designed by ASU Math Ed faculty that engages students in the learning of mathematics
    •
